From Sky to Table:
Fall Pheasant Hunting in Northern California
Hunting is a tradition that has been passed down for many generations in my family. In the past, it has been a male-dominated activity...though most recently, my 9-year old niece has expressed interest in learning how to shoot. She will be the first female in our family to take up hunting as a sport/way to gather food.
This series of photographs was taken early one morning at sunrise. Together with my grandfather, father, brother and niece, we woke at 5 am to hit the fields. My brother's dogs led the way, helping us locate the birds with their stunning sense of smell. Upon finding each bird, the dogs startled them into the air, allowing the hunter to take aim and shoot. At the end of the day, we came home with 6 pheasants. After cooking and preparing the birds, our family sat down to enjoy a meal together.
