Building Fibwanse Women's Bakery
“Fibwanse” means ‘one roof over the heads of many women’ in Chibemba, a common language spoken in Central Zambia. I lived at the Fibwanse Women’s Club from 2003-2004. With a grant gifted from Soroptimist International, Chico Branch, the women of Fibwanse came together and decided to build a small business with their capital. Using the money gifted, they fixed their oven, bought bulk ingredients from town and began to organize the creation of a bakery out of their center. Everyday the women met, making fresh scones for the community. The profits made were filtered back into programs/food assistance to help elderly, single mothers, abused women and widows in their village.
